Do Electric Vehicles Require an MOT?

Like petrol and diesel vehicles, electric and hybrid cars must have a valid MOT certificate once they are over three years old. The key difference is that fully electric vehicles are not subject to an emissions test, so this element of the MOT inspection does not apply.

We are equipped to carry out MOT testing for hybrid and electric vehicles. However, some exclusions may apply — currently including certain Tesla models. For further information, please contact us.

When Is Your Electric Vehicle MOT Due?

Not sure when your EV last had its MOT? It may be due sooner than you think. There are two simple ways to check your electric vehicle’s MOT expiry date:

1. Check your current MOT certificate
Find your existing certificate and look at the expiry date. If you would like to keep the same renewal date each year, you can book your EV’s MOT up to one month (minus one day) before it expires without affecting the new expiry date.

2. Use ESP Servicing’s MOT Due Date Checker
Enter your vehicle details into our online MOT due date checker and instantly find out when your electric vehicle’s MOT is due. You can also sign up for our free MOT reminder service, and we’ll notify you before your renewal date so you have plenty of time to book an appointment that suits you.

What an Electric Vehicle MOT Covers

An electric vehicle (EV) MOT closely mirrors a standard vehicle MOT, with the main difference being the absence of emissions testing. To issue a valid MOT certificate, our technicians carefully inspect the following components according to the DVSA’s minimum standards:

  • Vehicle Identification Number

  • Registration plate

  • Lights

  • Steering and suspension

  • Wipers and washer bottle

  • Windscreen

  • Horn

  • Seatbelts

  • Seats

  • Bodywork

  • Doors

  • Mirrors

  • Wheels and tyres

  • Brakes

For a comprehensive breakdown of each check we perform during an EV MOT, visit our main MOT page.

How an Electric Vehicle MOT Differs?

The main difference between an electric vehicle (EV) MOT and a standard MOT lies in emissions testing. Since EVs run entirely on electricity and have no exhaust system, they produce no fumes. As a result, they are not subject to the emissions or noise tests that are required for vehicles with conventional petrol or diesel engines.

How Long Does an Electric Vehicle MOT Take?

An electric vehicle MOT typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour, as our skilled technicians carry out a thorough inspection of all key components.

You’re welcome to leave your EV with us and use the time to grab a coffee, run errands, or relax. All our MOT centres are equipped with comfortable seating and complimentary WiFi, so you can stay productive or unwind while we take care of your vehicle.

Keep Your EV in Top Condition with Professional MOT & Servicing

To help your electric vehicle pass its MOT smoothly, it’s important to have it properly serviced beforehand. Our experienced technicians perform a complete EV service, checking all essential components to ensure your car is safe, fully maintained, and ready for the road.

Is It More Expensive to MOT an Electric Vehicle?

No—MOTs for electric vehicles cost the same as for standard petrol or diesel cars, even though some components inspected differ. The maximum fee for an MOT is £54.85. For an exact quote, simply enter your postcode and vehicle registration in the search above.
