Pre-MOT Checks You Can Do Yourself

Ensure your tyres are properly inflated—check your vehicle handbook for the recommended pressures or use a tyre pressure gauge. Tyres must also have at least 1.6mm of tread depth across the full width of the tyre.

A simple way to check tread depth is the 20p test. Inspect for unusual wear patterns, which could indicate alignment or suspension issues. Tyre problems are among the most common causes of MOT failures, so it’s especially important to check them before your test.

Pay attention to any unusual noises or rattling while your vehicle is running, as this could indicate an issue with the exhaust system that may cause an MOT failure.

Check for smoke coming from the exhaust—some smoke on startup is normal for diesel engines, but excessive or persistent smoke could signal a problem.

Additionally, any fuel or oil leaks from the exhaust may point to issues further upstream, such as spark plugs or glow plugs not burning fuel correctly.

Any chip or crack in your windscreen larger than 40mm can cause an MOT failure. On the driver’s side, the limit is stricter: any damage over 10mm within the area covered by the driver-side wiper will result in a fail.

It’s also important to check your wipers and washer system. Wipers should be in good condition and effectively clear the windscreen, and the washer fluid must be topped up. Split wipers or a blocked washer system need attention before your MOT, as these issues can lead to a failed test.

• Ensure your vehicle has enough fuel and engine oil, as these are needed for certain MOT checks, including emissions tests.

• Check your oil level:

  • Remove the dipstick from the engine and wipe it clean.

  • Reinsert the dipstick fully, then remove it again to read the level.

  • Make sure the oil sits between the minimum and maximum marks (refer to your vehicle manual).

• Always perform this check on a level surface to get an accurate reading.

• Ensure your braking system is in full working order before your MOT.

• Check for pulling: If the car pulls to one side when braking, this indicates a problem that must be addressed.

• Visual inspection:

  • If you have alloy wheels, you may be able to inspect brake pads and discs without removing the wheels.

  • Look for excessive wear or pitted discs, which could signal the need for replacement.

• Test the handbrake: It must be strong enough to hold the car stationary, especially on an incline.
