Free MOT Retest & What to Do if Your EV Fails
If your electric vehicle does not meet the DVSA’s standards, it will fail the MOT and must be repaired before a pass certificate can be issued. Remember, a valid MOT is a legal requirement in the UK, and you cannot renew your road tax without a current MOT.
The tester at the centre will provide a VT30 ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate’, detailing the areas where your vehicle did not meet the required standards. They can also offer guidance on how to resolve the issues.
If you believe the tester’s decision was unfair, you can appeal the result using a VT17 form, which explains the process for challenging an MOT test decision.
In some cases, you may be eligible for a free MOT re-test once the necessary repairs have been completed.
Can I Drive My EV if It Fails Its MOT?
Driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal. Whether you can drive your vehicle depends on the expiry date of your previous MOT certificate:

If your current MOT has not yet expired, you may drive your car only to get repairs or to a pre-booked MOT appointment, and only if it is confirmed to be roadworthy.

In most other situations, you should not drive a vehicle without a valid MOT, as doing so may invalidate your insurance.
To avoid disruption, it’s advisable to book your MOT up to 28 days in advance. The expiry date from your previous certificate will roll over, so you won’t lose any days.
If your vehicle fails due to specific minor issues (listed below) and is returned for a re-test by the end of the next working day, the re-test is free of charge.
How to Claim a Free MOT Re-Test
- Repairs at the Testing Centre: If your vehicle fails the MOT and remains at the testing station for repairs and a re-test without leaving the premises, the re-test is free.
- Minor Failures with Prompt Return: If your vehicle fails due to one or more specific items (see list below) and is returned for a re-test by the end of the next working day, no re-test fee is charged.
Free MOT Re-Test Criteria
A retest is free of charge if your vehicle is repaired and returned before the end of the next working day, and the failure relates to one of the following items:

If your vehicle fails an emissions test due to a faulty exhaust component, it may not be necessary to replace the entire exhaust system. Even a small leak can affect test results, so it’s a good idea to have your exhaust checked before taking your vehicle for its annual MOT.
