Air Conditioning Recharge and Maintenance

The price of an air conditioning recharge depends on the type of refrigerant gas used in your vehicle.
Most vehicles on UK roads use one of two refrigerants – R134A or R1234YF. These gases cannot be interchanged. The connection port used for R1234YF systems is different from R134A, which prevents the incorrect refrigerant from being used. A limited number of electric vehicles now use R744 refrigerant.

R134A refrigerant is typically used in vehicles manufactured before 2014. Vehicles produced after 1st January 2017 with air conditioning systems generally use the newer R1234YF refrigerant, which is designed to have a lower environmental impact. From this date, manufacturers were required to move away from the older R134A gas due to environmental regulations.
During the transition period between 2014 and 2016, vehicles could be fitted with either refrigerant type. To determine which air conditioning gas your car requires and to begin your booking, simply enter your registration number in the field above.

Vehicle manufacturers commonly recommend recharging the air conditioning system every two years. As air conditioning performance is not checked during an MOT test and recharge services are not usually included in routine servicing, it is important to include this as part of your regular vehicle maintenance schedule.

If your air conditioning blows warm air or works inconsistently, a recharge may help restore cooling performance when you need it most. It can also improve fuel efficiency by reducing strain on the engine and cooling system. Unpleasant odours from your air vents may also indicate that your system requires attention, such as an air-con debug.

Air conditioning systems are useful all year round. In addition to keeping your car cool during warm weather, they can also help remove condensation from your windscreen in winter. Air conditioning systems generate dry air, which clears moisture from the glass faster than normal ventilation.

The recharge procedure involves removing any remaining refrigerant gas and oil from the system before refilling it with the correct amount of new refrigerant and lubricant according to the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. A vacuum test is also performed to check for leaks or damage that may cause refrigerant loss.
The entire process usually takes around one hour to complete, allowing your vehicle to deliver cool air again. Our technicians can demonstrate the difference in air conditioning performance before and after the recharge. Systems that are not recharged regularly become less efficient and must work harder, which increases engine load and fuel consumption. If your air conditioning has not been serviced within the last two years, its cooling performance may already be reduced.

If the temperature of the air coming from your vents does not improve by more than 10% (measured in degrees Celsius), you will not be charged for the service.*

* Please note that if the surrounding temperature is below 9°C, this may affect the accuracy of the air conditioning recharge test. In such cases, the decision to provide a refund for improvements below 10% is at the manager’s discretion.

If unpleasant smells are coming from your air vents when the AC is switched on, your vehicle may benefit from an air conditioning cleaning service, commonly known as a debug.

Like petrol and diesel vehicles, electric and hybrid vehicles also require periodic air conditioning recharge when the refrigerant gas needs replacing. Without this maintenance, the system may lose efficiency and begin blowing warm air.

Regular maintenance is particularly important in electric vehicles because the air conditioning system is also used for thermal management. This means it helps regulate the temperature of components such as batteries and electric motors, which can generate heat during operation. By cooling the battery, the air conditioning system supports efficient charging and helps maintain overall vehicle performance and battery life.

In many hybrid and electric vehicles, the air conditioning system plays a key role in maintaining battery efficiency and preventing overheating.

Electric vehicles generally use the same refrigerant gases as conventional vehicles, with many requiring the newer R1234YF refrigerant.
