Class 7 MOT Test for Light Commercial Vehicles
Most vehicles over three years old require an annual MOT test to confirm they meet road safety and environmental standards. While the standard Class 4 MOT applies to private cars and smaller vans, a Class 7 MOT is required for light commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight between 3,000kg and 3,500kg.
It’s important to note that motorhomes weighing up to 3,500kg are typically tested under the Class 4 category rather than Class 7.
What is a Class 7 MOT check?
A Class 7 MOT is required for light commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight between 3,001kg and 3,500kg. In comparison, cars and smaller vans — even when used for business purposes — are typically tested under a Class 4 MOT. If you are unsure which category applies to your vehicle, you should check your vehicle handbook or V5C registration document.
The inspection carried out during a Class 7 MOT is similar to a Class 4 test, but it includes additional and more detailed checks due to the higher weight classification. These include assessments to ensure the tyres are suitable for carrying heavier loads, along with enhanced brake performance testing to meet required safety standards.
