An MOT test can be completed at any time before the expiry date. However, to retain the same renewal date for the following year, your MOT must be carried out up to one month (minus one day) before it expires. For example, if your MOT expires on 27th June, the earliest you can renew it while keeping the same renewal date would be 28th May.

An MOT is a legally required annual inspection for most vehicles in the UK over three years old (and some over one year). During the test, a qualified examiner thoroughly inspects your vehicle to confirm it is roadworthy on the day of testing. However, an MOT is not the same as a vehicle service and does not assess the overall mechanical health of the car. A pass certificate confirms the vehicle met the required standards at the time of inspection only.

If your vehicle passes, you’ll receive a certificate along with notes of any minor issues that may need attention in the future. If it fails, you’ll be given details of major or dangerous faults that must be repaired. In some cases, if repairs are completed at the same centre, you may qualify for a free re-test.

Most vehicles over three years old must have a valid MOT certificate, which needs to be renewed every year. If your vehicle is less than three years old, it does not require an MOT until the third anniversary of its first registration. After that, it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the MOT is renewed every 12 months.

Certain vehicles, including taxis and ambulances, are subject to earlier testing requirements and may need an MOT after just one year.

An MOT certificate is typically valid for 12 months from the expiry date of your previous certificate, rather than 12 months from the date the test was carried out. This helps you maintain the same renewal cycle each year.

It’s important to check the expiry date carefully to avoid driving with an invalid MOT. You can find the exact expiry date printed on your current MOT certificate.

You can have your vehicle tested up to 28 days before the expiry date shown on your current MOT certificate. Booking within this period ensures you keep the same renewal date for the following year without losing any remaining validity.

For example, if your MOT expires on 15th October, you can arrange the test anytime between 17th September and 15th October. The new certificate would then be valid until 15th October the following year.

An MOT is legally required to confirm that your vehicle is safe to operate on public roads and meets environmental standards. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to fines or other penalties. For more details on the consequences, see the section below.

Electric and hybrid vehicles, like petrol and diesel cars, must have a valid MOT once they reach 3 years of age. The key difference is that electric vehicles are exempt from the emissions test, so this part of the MOT inspection is not carried out.

Driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal and also prevents you from renewing your vehicle tax. If caught, you could face a fine of up to £1,000. If your car has failed its MOT and is classified as ‘dangerous,’ driving it could lead to a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points on your licence. A vehicle is considered dangerous if it poses an immediate threat to road safety or significantly harms the environment through excessive emissions.
